Ranitidine, commonly known as Zantac, is used to prevent and treat peptic ulcer in the stomach, duodenum and gastrointestinal bleeding. This medicine reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach, and thus can heal the ulcer. It also reduces the inflammation and bad feeling caused by inflammation of the esophagus accompanied by fluids (reflux). This treatment is usually given for 4-8 weeks, with shorter treatments for repeated symptoms. Unlike cimetidine, which is a similar drug, Ranitidine does not affect the action of certain enzymes in the liver, the organ in which most drugs are disassembled. This means that Ranitidine can be combined with other drugs, such as Anticoagulant and Antispasmodic, without any interaction between these drugs, which may affect the effectiveness of the treatment. Most people do not have severe side effects during the treatment period. Because it stimulates healing of the lining of the stomach, there is a risk that the signs of gastric cancer will mask and impede diagnosis. For this reason, this medicine is given only after excluding the possibility of stomach cancer.
