- Hydroquinone is an effective drug to lighten the color of dark skin spots. Hydroquinone works by slowing melanin production in the skin. Hydroquinone is used in the treatment of pigmentation, for example: Chloasma (brown spots appear during pregnancy), freckles (Lentigo - brown spots that appear as a result of exposure to sunlight), spots caused by aging, spots that appear as a result of acne (Acne) and freckles.
Hydroquinone is an ointment. Sun exposure is prohibited when using ointment and an ointment should be used to prevent sunlight. It is also advised to continue to use sunscreen ointment after finishing treatment with hydroquinone to avoid pigmentation again.
